Trash Talk: Eyes & nines

21/07/10  ||  Khlysty

Ten songs, seventeen-plus minutes, American band, hardcore… guess you see what I’m getting at, dontcha? Well, of course, what I’m getting at, WHAT I’m getting AT is that these guys RAWK! They GROOVE! They SHAKE YA BOOTIES! They FUNK THE NIGHT OUT! They ARE THE HOTTEST SHIT IN TOWN TONITE! They…

Ummm, yeah, I think that I should control my expletives a little bit. This is no way to treat a record that’s been placed in my hands for a serious and professional review, so that the readers of GD might deign to check it out and, ultimately, make it a part of their extensive “to buy” lists. So, I think that, as a matter of fact, I should present things in a more matter-of-fact way.

But, and that’s one big-ass BUT, no matter how matter-of-factly I try to present a record, there’s always the matter of personal TASTE and of the MOMENT that a reviewer decides to review a record give to him by the Powers That Be (wink-wink-nudge-nudge, you know who you are, eh?) for review. And, even though my taste is quite irreproachable, sometimes the conjunction overcomes me.

It’s at moments like this that I turn inwards, so as to be able to turn my thoughts about ANY GIVEN RECORD outwards with even a modicum of objectivity. So, to attain the detachment needed to negotiate the subjectivity the moment imposes on my critical/analytical intellectual tools, I have to search for inner tranquility through a self-assessment and internal audit, so to speak.

What? Oh, okay, then. “Eyes & Nines” is modernized hardcore punk. It lasts 17 minutes and change. Besides the band, there’s the guy from Bronx (the band, not the borough) who sings in a coupla songs. The songs are generally super-fast, except for a coupla tracks which are slower. The music is intense, as hXc should be. The vocals are of the screamo type, except when the guy from Bronx adds his tough shout. Overall, it’s pretty cool and I like it. Actually, I like it so much as to give it a…

… but I don’t want to be fucked with a dildo, golden or otherwise. So, there.
